I am Haridra Bora, a fourth-year student of Miranda House, University of Delhi, and a resident of Golaghat, Assam. I am currently majoring in Geography, which has provided me with the required understanding of the environmental issues faced by our society. Moreover, I have adequate skills in geo-spatial techniques, especially in using QGIS, learned as a part of my coursework. My interest area lies in climate change adaptation and community-based disaster management. Through my academic and extracurricular activities, I have gained relevant experience of conducting surveys, designing questionnaires, doing literature review and teamwork.
Project/Capstone: Capturing Women’s Narratives of Climate Change from Guwahati, Assam
In Guwahati, women’s voices, especially in the context of the impacts of climate change, are often ignored. The goal of this project is to document the experiences of women and recommend solutions for more gender responsive climate action. The beneficiaries of this project will be the women of Guwahati whose concerns will be heard and recorded. Secondly, the findings can be used by local NGOs like Aaranyak and policymakers.
Future Goals/Next Steps
When I started this mentorship programme, I was uncertain about how I could contribute to sustainable solutions that can be used in the place where I live. The weekly meetings and the courses that I took up over the past four months enabled me to understand that my academic strength can be used to give a platform to the people whose voices are often overlooked. I grew as an individual - made more sustainable choices, and what grew with me is my ability to critically look at policies and initiatives. Now I look forward to diving deeper into this project as a part of my master's thesis. Moreover, in the long run I plan on to work with NGOs and conduct survey on climate-gender issues and draft solution report to be used by the policy-makers
