Business Details

Ponts'o is a qualified journalist, who contributes her love for words to training AI models. Her initial focus prior to joining the mentorship program was AI application within the sustainability realm but after expansive research and insightful talks with her mentor, her stance is slowly moving towards AI ethics, policy and governance. A true testament to the growth that the program encourages and nurtures.

Project/Capstone:

The aim of the project is to create awareness on the negative environmental impact caused by the data centres housing supercomputers that power large language models (LLMs) via an infographic. This is a contentious issue that is hardly spoken about, and with the advent of LLMs and upsurge of their everyday usage, I intend to disseminate information about how that affects the environment and to promote responsible usage amongst youngsters.

This project is a culmination of my interest in the convergence of AI and sustainability. Throughout the programme I have learned of the various ways that AI can be used to achieve sustainability. However, the use of AI also has adverse effects on the environment so I intend to highlight the extent of it being a double-edged sword. More importantly, it also applies the insights from the programme that emphasised promoting sustainability in my community, and creating feasible solutions.

Future Goals/Next Steps
My future goal is to spread awareness beyond my target audience (10 - 18 year olds) and transform the infographic's data into a simple, engaging online calculator or interactive quiz (e.g., "What's the carbon footprint of your favorite AI tool?"). This would allow users to directly estimate the environmental impact of their own AI usage and encourage proactive behavior change.
